Description

Willowrun Veterinary Hospital's founder, Dr. Ed Boyette, began practicing veterinary medicine locally in 1938 working out of the Smithfield Mule Barn on Main Street. In 1946, he built a brand new 940 square foot office on Truck Lane and practiced there until Willowrun was purchased by Dr. Charles "Bug" Swearingen, a graduate of Auburn University's Veterinary College. Dr. Swearingen owned and operated Willowrun until his retirement in 1985.

In March 2002, Willowrun Veterinary Hospital received recognition for fifty consecutive years of membership in AAHA at the national convention in Boston. The doctors and staff continue to honor the tradition established by Dr. Swearingen by undergoing a vigorous accreditation process covering more than 900 standards of care every 3 years. Of more than 3,500 accredited practices, less than 50 have been members for as long as Willowrun Veterinary Hospital. This practice has a long and wonderful history of service to Johnston County, and continues to evolve to meet the needs of the people and pets of this community!

"I grew up in Fayetteville and my father ran the local F.C.X. farm supply store. As a child, I learned to take care of our farm animals among my other chores at home and at the store. When I was 13 years old my horse Honey O'Mine broke open the door to the feed room and got sick with colic from overeating. It was very tough for me to see her in so much pain and I was amazed at how quickly she was able to get relief when Dr. Garrett arrived on the farm and went to work. I decided that very day that I wanted to become a veterinarian."

I was accepted as a member of the second class of students admitted to the new veterinary school at North Carolina State University beginning in the fall of 1982. During college I worked at Six Forks Animal Hospital and at Apex Veterinary Hospital. The doctors at Apex bought Willowrun from Dr. Bug Swearingen in 1985 and hired me to begin work alongside Dr. Kurt Zimmerman. My new bride Carol and I moved to Smithfield in the spring of 1986.

Veterinary medicine is a very interesting career and I have enjoyed working here in Johnston County. This community is also a wonderful place to raise a family. Carol and I have 2 sons and both of them are graduates of Smithfield-Selma High School and North Carolina State University. Rhett is a middle school teacher and lives in Washington, DC with his wife Katie. Kevin is a construction engineer and lives in Clayton with his wife Erin.

Another great aspect of living in Smithfield has been the opportunity to get involved in a close knit community. We treasure our membership at First Baptist Church along with the many close friends we have made in our congregation. I am a charter member of the Rotary Club of Central Johnston County and enjoy staying involved with the different avenues of service that it offers. I have been on several international mission trips with both our church and with Rotary and love the chance to travel and serve.

I have worked at Willowrun for my entire career and have experienced our transition from a rural, farm call based practice to one that now focuses mostly on pets seen in our facility. I value the history of the practice and the fact that it has been in operation since 1946. I have had the change to work with some wonderful associate veterinarians and am very fortunate to have a great business partner in Dr. Eileen Langdon. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the people and pets in our community alongside our dedicated and talented staff members.

"While I was in college (late 70s-early 80s) in Kentucky, I was trying to figure out God's plan for me. I felt called to serve. I felt called to serve the ones in our world who seemingly have no voice. The ones who need an advocate. So, for me, that meant kids (a pediatrician) or critters (a veterinarian). Well, critters it was and it has been, and continues to be, an exciting and ongoing adventure!"

Dr. Langdon received her degree from Auburn University in 1986, has been a member of the Willowrun family and health care team since 1990 and became a partner in 2007.She and her husband Mike, have three children: John Michael, Hunter and Megan. Together as a family, they run a 3rd generation farm in the McGees Crossroads community. Livestock and crops are raised on the farm where preserving its natural resources are always the first priority. As the 2010 winner of the NC Conservation Farm Family of the year award, they take stewardship very seriously. One of their favorite hobbies is tending to their purebred and crossbred cattle herd of Red Angus and Simmental. Look them up at the NC State Fair where the kids often show their purebred cattle!

"As far back as I can remember I have always wanted to be a veterinarian. Growing up my family only had one dog (a golden retriever named Sandy) and one cat (an orange tabby named Tiger). Of course with time this grew to include a few more cats, some guinea pigs, a rabbit, 3 horses (which we still have today!), and even an iguana and a tarantula (no those were not mine!). Looking back on all of the animals that have impacted my life I realize that they have each helped me find this calling at a young age. When I turned sixteen I began working for our family veterinarian at North Fork Animal Hospital and the rest is history. So if you have asked me how long I have been practicing veterinary medicine, now you see why I may say "it seems like forever" but I wouldn't have it any other way!"

Dr. Hansen is a 2012 graduate of North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Rebecca grew up on the North Fork of Long Island, NY but has made North Carolina her home since her move south in 2006. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from Cornell University in 2003. Prior to veterinary school, Rebecca worked at the Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab on Plum Island, NY for two years followed by another two years of research in immunology with NC State University’s Department of Microbiology. Dr. Hansen enjoys working with all species of animals. She is especially interested in equine reproduction and dentistry as well as small animal medicine and surgery. Rebecca lives in Clayton with her two horses (Laura and Bucky) and three border collie mixed breed dogs (Pepper, Little Bit, & Annabelle). Rebecca’s hobbies include line dancing, riding horses, and hiking with her dogs.

“While most people have a clear memory of when they realized they wanted to be a veterinarian, I never experienced that lightbulb moment. However, growing up reading James Herriot, living on a dairy farm with my German Shepherd Dog and going to an ag focused college where I spent my mornings feeding or milking cows at 5am before class, I slowly realized that no other job could possibly give me the same fulfillment. Being able to provide care when an animal needs it, from the home or farm, is incredibly rewarding and something that will motivate me for my entire career.”

Dr. Hammond is a 2015 graduate of the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hammond spent his early years in Mableton, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb, taking care of every kind of animal a half acre lot can hold. He moved as a young teenager to the Kennesaw Mountain area northwest of Atlanta, where he and his family started My Dad and Me Family Farm. Today the farm centers around its registered Jersey herd and milk production, but also produces free range eggs, broilers and rabbits, garden produce and homemade goods. He worked on the farm as a homeschooled student until attending Berry College of Rome, GA, where he obtained a Bachelor degree in English, with minors in Animal Science and Chemistry in 2011.

Dr. Hammond has held several part time jobs in Georgia with local feed stores and farms, and enjoys supporting the small family farm. He loves working with all animals, and has special interest in working dogs, cattle, emergency medicine and small animal surgery. Dr. Hammond recently moved to the Kenly area after joining the Willowrun team in June 2015. He is married to Dr. Madeline Hammond who specializes in acupuncture and integrative medicine and also works at Willowrun. Dr. Hammond currently has a German Shepherd named Liesel, a husky mix named Desmond, and a Siamese cat named Floyd. Outside of work Dr. Hammond enjoys spending his time writing, dog training, hiking, beekeeping, and watching the Atlanta Braves.
