We provide 24 hour emergency care and specialty veterinary services such as behavior, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology and surgery. We do not provide primary care services.

Larry Berkwitt

Dr. Larry Berkwitt is a graduate of The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. He has also completed his internship and residency training at Ohio State University. Dr. Berkwitt's responsibilities and interests are broad. Clinical responsibilities include medical referrals and ultrasonography. Dr. Berkwitt is active in the College of Internal Medicine, the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association, and in the management of our hospital. Anthony Acquaviva

Dr. Acquaviva graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Upon graduation, he completed a one-year rotating internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital followed by a one-year surgical internship at Veterinary Specialty Center of Delaware. Dr. Acquaviva continued his surgical training by completing a surgical residency at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. He is a board certified veterinary surgeon.

Dr. Acquaviva is proficient in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. He has published research investigating the use of locking plates for bone fractures. Dr. Acquaviva's clinical interests include tibial plateau leveling osteotomy, tibial tuberosity advancement surgery, fracture management, arthroscopy, neurosurgery, and minimally invasive soft tissue surgery.

Nathaniel Fenollosa

Dr. Nathaniel Fenollosa graduated from the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. As a student at Tufts, he co-authored an extensive research study on the population characteristics and survival of cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Upon graduation, Dr. Fenollosa completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA. Following his internship Dr. Fenollosa completed a cardiology residency also at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. After completing his cardiology residency training, Dr. Fenollosa moved to Western Massachusetts to join the specialty staff at Angell Animal Medical Center Western New England in Springfield, MA. Dr. Fenollosa became board certified in the specialty of cardiology in July of 2005. In addition to his duties as a staff cardiologist, Dr. Fenollosa served as Internship Director at Angell Western New England. His special interdisciplinary interests include management of chronic heart disease, endocarditis, and pulmonary hypertension. Outside of work, Dr. Fenollosa enjoys spending time outdoors with his young family, hiking, snowshoeing, boating, and playing ice hockey. Dr. Fenollosa has two pets: Maddie, a retriever mix and Beep, a scruffy tabby cat who's always trying to elevate his position within the family hierarchy. Dr. Fenollosa joined the staff at the VCA Shoreline Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in May of 2007.

Dr. Heather Galano is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Neurology/Neurosurgery). Prior to attending veterinary school she took one year off after college to travel to Australia and New Zealand. She obtained her veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. She completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine at the University of Georgia and a fellowship at the Veterinary Neurological Center in Phoenix, and a residency in neurology/neurosurgery at North Carolina State University in 2005. She then went to California to work in a private practice with three other neurologists. After 2 years of missing the East Coast she returned and moved to Westport, CT. Dr. Galano has a yellow Lab named Bodie, who is her best friend. She loves the outdoors, spending the time on the beach, hiking, running, and cooking. She also loves to travel.

Melissa Holahan

Dr. Holahan graduated from Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Upon graduation, Dr. Holahan completed a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. In July 2010 she completed a residency in emergency and critical care medicine at the Michigan State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She is board certified in emergency and critical care. She has published and performed research in the areas of enteral nutrition in critical ill patients, the use of fenoldapam in acute renal failure and lactate as a prognostic indicator in dogs with immune mediated hemolytic anemia. Her interests include acute renal failure, dialysis, positive pressure ventilation, and sepsis.

Dr. Holahan is available for emergency and critical care transfers, case discussions and phone consultations.

Ellen Lindell

Dr. Ellen Lindell is a veterinary behaviorist and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. Her main area of interest is the treatment of behavior problems in companion animals. Dr. Lindell is also available for behavioral wellness evaluations and pre-adoption counseling.

Dr. Lindell received her Veterinary Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. After 10 years in small animal practice, she began a residency in veterinary behavior at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Lindell has been treating behavior patients on a referral basis since 1994. She presently owns Veterinary Behavior Consultations, PC, a behavioral specialty practice.

Though most of her days are spent practicing behavioral medicine, Dr. Lindell also enjoys lecturing to veterinarians and dog affiliated organizations on a local and national basis. She continues to write on the subject of veterinary behavior. Her articles have been published in several veterinary textbooks and journals.

Dr. Lindell maintains her membership in a number of regional and international professional organizations including the New York State Veterinary Medical Society, Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association, the International Society of Applied Ethology, and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.

Dr. Lindell spends her spare time training her own dogs. She hopes to spend the next few years participating in both obedience and agility competitions.

Her surgical training included a surgical internship at Dallas Veterinary Surgery Center, a small animal surgical residency at The Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, and a surgical fellowship also at The Animal Medical Center. Dr. Nolte is proficient in soft tissue surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery. Her research and clinical interests include oncologic/reconstructive surgery, fracture management and minimally invasive surgery, specifically laparoscopy and thoracoscopy.

From January 2004 to July 2004 she helped to manage Red Bank's satellite emergency facility '" South Jersey Veterinary Emergency Center. Between July 2004 and July 2007 she completed a residency in emergency and critical care at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. She has published and performed research in the areas of hyperglycemia in critical illness, the use of hemodialysis and positive pressure ventilation due to baclofen toxicity, and glucose abnormalities during sepsis. Her interests include sepsis, endocrine abnormalities during sepsis, positive pressure ventilation, and emergency surgery. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family, friends, and pets.

Dr. Michelle Cieplucha obtained her veterinary degree from Colorado State University in 2002. She then returned home to the east coast to complete an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Norwalk, CT in 2003. Dr. Cieplucha then went on to a residency in small animal internal medicine at Michigan State University from 2003 to 2006. She is currently board-eligible for the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Cieplucha enjoys all aspects of internal medicine and ultrasound. She is happy to finally be home and settled with her family in Connecticut. Currently the 4 legged members of her family include Suki, a 10-year-old female fawn Pug, Jasmine, a 6-year-old female black Pug and Jambo, a 12-year-old male orange cat. She enjoys spending time with her pets, cooking, baking, traveling and most of all spending time with her young daughter. Dr. Cieplucha joined the staff at VCA Shoreline Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in November of 2006.
