At VCA Aurora Animal Hospital, we provide 24 hour emergency services, primary care services such as health exams and vaccinations and specialty services such as dermatology, internal medicine, medical oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, radiology, and surgery.

VCA Aurora Animal Hospital was established as an animal hospital in 1912, and has been part of the community ever since. We are fortunate to provide both specialty and emergency care, but our general practice will always be a mainstay of our facility. We have five doctors that are here to serve your and your pet's needs, and offer appointments until 8:00 p.m. during the week, and until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. We have over a hundred staff members to support our doctors and offer the highest quality medicine available. Our facility and equipment is truly state-of the-art and we invite you to visit us.

Terry Medinger, DVM, MS, DACVIM, Medical Director
Terry Medinger, DVM, MS, DACVIM, Medical Director

Terry Medinger, graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986 and was in private practice in the Chicagoland area for 3 years. He completed a small animal internal medicine residency/Master's Degree program at Kansas State University and became board certified in 1992. In addition to providing state-of-the-art medical care for patients with complex diseases, Dr. Medinger performs advanced diagnostic procedures including complete cardiac work-ups with color flow Doppler, electrocardiography, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy and cystoscopy. Dr. Medinger also performs therapeutic placement of tracheal and urethral stents and oversees the radioactive I131 program for treatment of hyperthyroid cats. Dr. Medinger enjoys diagnosing and treating all internal medicine disorders and has special interest in endocrinology, gastroenterology and diseases of the kidney.

Veterinary Specialist (Surgery)

Dr. Abel is a board certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Iowa State University in 1985. He has been practicing in the Chicagoland area since 1985. In 2003 he completed a surgical residency at Norwood Park Animal Hospital and in 2005 he became board certified.

Prior to joining VCA Aurora Animal Hospital, Dr. Abel was at Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee. He has served as small animal representative of AVMA Drug Advisory Committee. Dr. Abel specializes in both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery and is certified in TPLO.

Matthew Bischoff, DVM, MS

Veterinary Specialist (Diagnostic Imaging)

Dr. Bischoff graduated from the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997 and went on to pursue a residency in radiology in 2002 and a Master of Science in diagnostic imaging of the canine shoulder in 2003. While working as faculty at the University of Illinois, Dr. Bischoff completed his fellowship in CT and Magnetic Resonance Imaging and received his board certification in radiology.

Prior to joining VCA Aurora, Dr. Bischoff worked at a large specialty hospital in Indiana. Dr. Bischoff performs ultrasonography, radiographic interpretation, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging, fluoroscopy and general radiology.

Dr. Alison Book graduated from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. After finishing a small animal rotating internship at Washington State University, she went on to complete an oncology residency and masters degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. After becoming ACVIM board certified in oncology in 2012, she worked at a private practice in Portland, Oregon for 3 years. Her professional interests include bone cancer, mast cell tumors and immunotherapy. Dr. Book has a passion for educating clients and the veterinary community about oncology. She works with her clients and patients to focus on goal oriented decision making, putting an emphasis on quality of life. Outside of work, Dr. Book enjoys running, hiking, fishing and spending time with her family. She shares her life with her husband, daughter, dog, Phoenix and cats, Sidney and Luna.

Bobbi Jo Burkett, DVM

Dr. Bobbi Jo Burkett grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota where she grew her love for veterinary medicine. Bobbi graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN with a bachelor�s degree in Veterinary Sciences and was a certified veterinary technician prior to attending veterinary school. Bobbi graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. She completed a rotating internship at VCA Aurora Animal Hospital in July 2016 and is happy to be staying on as one of our overnight emergency clinicians. Bobbi has a strong interest in ultrasound and CT, and is planning on applying for a diagnostic imaging residency.

Veterinary Specialist (Ophthalmology)

Dr. Enry Garcia, graduated from a Veterinary School in Brasilia/Brazil in 2004. Prior to and after graduation, he did clinical rotations at several Veterinary Colleges in the USA. After spending one year at University of Wisconsin-Madison (including a 4-month rotation at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory), Dr. Garcia went on to complete a rotating small animal internship at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, followed by a 3-year Ophthalmology Residency and Master's degree at Colorado State University. Dr. Garcia performs all basic ophthalmologic procedures and cutting edge therapies including laser and drainage implants for glaucoma as well as complicated cataract surgeries. His main interests include corneal surgery and small-incision phacoemulsification surgery for lens luxation/sub-luxation.

Dr. Garcia is the first Brazilian to ever be accepted to an Board-approved Ophthalmology Residency in the USA and to become board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. He has performed and published numerous clinical/basic research papers and case reports on dogs, cats, rabbits, snakes and even fish! Dr. Garcia has been acting as a peer reviewer for The Scientific Journal "Veterinary Ophthalmology" since 2011, playing a central and critical part in the peer-review process that advances the understanding of our specialty.

Dr. Hiratzka obtained her veterinary degree from UW-Madison in 2010. She then completed two emergency internships. The first was at Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center in Waukesha, and the second was at Mass Vet Referral in Woburn, MA. She completed a residency in emergency and critical care in 2016. Her hobbies include rock climbing, cooking, and playing with her dog, Gambit.

Dr. Akiko Koshino received her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 2005. Before moving to the United States, she worked as a general practice clinician in Yokohama, Japan. Upon her move, she completed the Clinical Training Program at Louisiana State University and a small animal rotating internship at Iowa State University. With a strong interest in oncology, Dr. Koshino went on to complete and oncology internship at Western Veterinary Specialist Emergency Centre in Calgary, Canada and a medical oncology residency at Michigan State University.

Veterinary Specialist (Oncology)

Dr. Tiffany Leach, DVM, DACVIM is a board certified veterinary medical oncologist. She graduated and received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from Kansas State University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in 2007. She then completed an internship with VCA Aurora and VCA Berwyn in 2008. In 2011, she completed a 3 year residency in oncology at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital and has been in private practice since this time. Throughout her residency training, she also enjoyed working emergency, which helped to broaden her experience.

She appreciates all aspects of veterinary oncology, but truly values the close relationships she develops with her patients and their owners. One of her interests and publications was based on using metronomic low-dose chemotherapy protocols to help slow down cancer progression in patients with aggressive cancers that may not tolerate the high-dose regimens. She feels that the most important aspect of any treatment protocol is that the patient either maintains or ideally has an improved quality of life with their particular regimen.

During her free time she enjoys spending time with her Irish Wolfhound, Emmet, and exploring the city with her friends/family.

Veterinary Specialist (Dermatology)

Dr. Matousek received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Michigan State University and completed her dermatology residency at the University of Illinois, where she also served on for three years as a clinical instructor. Dr. Matousek has served on several committees for the American College of Veterinary Dermatology including the exam committee and she is currently on the executive board of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. She is also a member of the Chicagoland Veterinary Dermatology Group.

Dr. Matousek offers total management of allergies including skin testing, serum testing and allergen-specific immunotherapy, as well as diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune skin diseases, alopecias, and chronic or recurrent pyoderma, otitis and pododermatitis.

Dr. McCullough was previously on the staff at the University of Illinois where she was instrumental in creating the critical care unit. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1987 and was a general practitioner/emergency veterinarian for 9 years. She returned to the University of Illinois in 1995 and completed two residencies. Dr. McCullough has been boarded in internal medicine since 1998 and in emergency medicine and critical care since 2004. In addition to her critical care duties, Dr. McCullough is in charge of the internship program at VCA Aurora, VCA Berwyn and VCA Arboretum View Hospitals. She is adjunct professor at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Mercier has special interests in spondylomyelopathy (wobbler syndrome), seizure control and maintenance, meningoencephalomyeltitis (meningitis) and disc disease.

She then completed her Neurology/Neurosurgery residency at Mississippi State University.

Prior to working at VCA Aurora Animal Hospital, Dr. Ortinau worked for VCA Mission Animal Emergency and Referral Center in Mission, Kansas. Dr. Ortinau has special interests in inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system and intervertebral disc disease. Dr. Ortinau received her board certification in 2013.

Dr. Peacock graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine prior to completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Tennessee. He was a staff surgeon at a specialty hospital in Texas and then joined VCA Aurora. While Dr. Peacock performs both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, he has a special interest in arthroscopic surgery.

Dr. Meagan Sowders (Williams) received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. She completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Akron, Ohio in 2012, followed by completing a radiation oncology residency and Master's Degree at the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center in 2015. She is now board eligible with the American College of Veterinary Radiology in the discipline of Radiation Oncology. Her primary clinical interests include treatment of sinonasal tumors, palliative radiation therapy, and having a multimodal treatment approach to treating veterinary cancer patients in order to provide them with a good quality of life.

Dr. Soydan received her DVM degree from Cornell University in central New York. She then completed a small animal internship at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center and VCA Shoreline, two emergency centers located in southwestern Connecticut, followed by a one-year specialty cardiology internship at VCA Shoreline. More recently, she finished a three-year cardiology residency at the University of Wisconsin, where she fell in love with the midwestern states. She enjoys all aspects of diagnosing and managing cardiovascular disease, with special interests in arrhythmia evaluation, pulmonary hypertension and end-stage congestive heart failure control. She lives with her two cats, Daxter and Topal.

Dr. Tonozzi received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois in 2003. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, Maryland in 2004. She then went on to complete a residency in veterinary emergency and critical care medicine and surgery at the Animal Emergency Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 2004-2007. Dr. Tonozzi became boarded in 2008. Her interests include fluid therapy, trauma and critical care of the surgical patient.
