At Superior Animal Hospital & Boarding Suites, our mission is to provide clients and their pets with the opportunity to receive high quality, progressive, and compassionate services. We strive to deliver excellent care and client education through all stages of pets’ lives while recognizing the importance of the family pet bond.

Located in Superior, WI, we are a fully equipped small animal medical and surgical practice committed to staying at the forefront of modern veterinary medicine. Our accomplished clinical team is highly trained in a full-range of veterinary services for dogs and cats, combining cutting-edge medicine with traditional practices.

It is our goal to deliver superior clinical care and boarding services in a welcoming and friendly hospital environment. If we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you and your pet family yet, we invite you to schedule an appointment! We are open six days a week with Saturday hours for your convenience. New clients are always welcome.

Robert McClellan (‘Dr. Bob’), DVM & Hospital Medical Director
Robert McClellan (‘Dr. Bob’), DVM & Hospital Medical Director

Dr. Robert McClellan, also known as ‘Dr. Bob’, is the Medical Director at Superior Animal Hospital. He was raised on a dairy farm in southern Wisconsin, and his family was close with local veterinarians; giving Dr. Bob a good concept of what the veterinary field was all about from the very beginning. He attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs as a chemistry major and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 1986. Dr. Bob has professional interests in surgery, general canine and feline medicine, and small mammal (rabbit and pocket pet) care.

Dr. Bob worked in a mixed animal practice in Janesville, Wisconsin for 5 years; working with dogs and cats and assorted companion animals as well as farm animals and horses. For the next two years he worked at a companion animal emergency clinic in Rockford, Illinois and did relief work at a variety of veterinary practices in southern Wisconsin. In 1993, he moved to Superior, WI to work at Tower Avenue Veterinary Clinic before purchasing the practice in 1999. Tower Avenue Clinic became Superior Animal Hospital and Boarding Suites in 2003 when it moved to its new and current location on East 2nd Street.

Dr. Bob is an avid volunteer and involved with a number of organizations, including the Superior Rotary Club, Superior Sister City Commission, Humane Society of Douglas County, Arrowhead Veterinary Medical Association, United Presbyterian Church, and Superior Jaycees.

Dr. Bob is married to Serena, who works at the hospital as a pet behavior and puppy class specialist, and has two children. Dr. Bob and his family enjoy canoeing, camping, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, vegetable gardening, and cooking. Their family pets include three rambunctious cats Grace, Miles and Virgil, and two Chihuahuas that have some special needs, Leo and Ami.

Matt Severs, DVM
Matt Severs, DVM

Dr. Matt Severs grew up in Williams, MN, a small town in Lake of the Woods county. He received his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, and went on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 2015. Following graduation, Dr. Severs returned to the Duluth area to begin his veterinary career at Superior Animal Hospital. Dr. Severs has professional interests in soft-tissue surgery, oncology, and internal medicine.

Dr. Severs’ favorite part about working at Superior Animal Hospital is having the opportunity to provide high-quality medicine to the pets and pet owners of the Superior, WI community. In addition to practicing as an Associate Veterinarian at Superior Animal Hospital, Dr. Severs volunteers his time helping homeless pets at the Human Society of Douglas County.

In his spare time, Dr. Severs enjoys golfing, boating, and spending time with friends and family. In addition, he also loves camping with his faithful Yellow Labrador, Ruger. His first pet was a Golden Retriever named Whiskey. Dr. Severs loves pets of all breeds, but Labrador Retrievers hold a special place in his heart.

Jody Berquist, DVM
Jody Berquist, DVM

Dr. Jody Berquist is passionate about helping clients and their pets lead happier, healthier lives. Animals have been a large part of Dr. Berquist’s life since childhood, being active in 4-H and growing up on a farm in Proctor, MN. Her experience working at a veterinary clinic during high school and college deepened her desire to become a veterinarian and make a difference in the lives of pets and the people who love them.

Dr. Berquist earned her bachelor’s degree in veterinary science from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1994. In 1998, she graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. She joined the team at Superior Animal Hospital shortly after graduating in 1998, and she has professional interests in internal medicine, soft-tissue surgery, dermatology, and wellness exams. With over 34 years of experience in the veterinary field, Dr. Berquist has performed in all positions, from kennel staff, doctor’s assistant, receptionist, and finally a doctor.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Berquist and her husband enjoy hiking on the beach with their dogs, traveling, kayaking, and $5 night at the movies. Dr. Berquist is part of a big, close-knit family and volunteers her time at Trinity Lutheran Church. Her first pet was a Samoyed sled-dog named Timber, and she currently shares her home with two dogs, Ava and Casper, and four cats, Sophie, Ike, Hallie, and Tizsta. Fun fact: Ike is super intelligent and can open any cabinet and most containers to get food!

Jennifer Shamla, DVM
Jennifer Shamla, DVM

I love being a part of a group of great veterinarians, technicians, receptionists, and assistants, working to provide the best patient care that we possibly can. I enjoy being a part of our patients’ and their owners’ lives from the puppy and kitten stages through the end of life care, and I am appreciative and humbled by the trust that our clients place in us.

A native of Brule, WI, Dr. Jennifer Shamla received her undergraduate degree in Biology and Broadfield Science from the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1996. As an undergraduate she performed in the U.W.S. Symphonic Band and Chamber Orchestra, as well as many other local music groups. Driven to help animals, Dr. Shamla continued her education at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2000.

Following graduation, Dr. Shamla and her husband, Jon, returned to Superior where she has been employed at Superior Animal Hospital since July 2000. One of her favorite aspects of veterinary medicine is the close bond she forms with clients and their pets, and she enjoys treating patients through all of their life stages. Dr. Shamla has professional interests in dentistry and general practice.

In her free time, Dr. Shamla enjoys woodworking, home remodeling, music, and spending time with her family. She also volunteers services at Douglas County Humane Society. Dr. Shamla and Jon welcomed their sons, Thomas in August 2003 and Michael in November 2008, and their daughter, Julia, in January 2011. Their home is shared with Jack, a black Labrador mix, Walter, a Golden Retriever mix, and an orange rescue cat, Rhubarb.

Sarah Harwood, DVM
Sarah Harwood, DVM

Originally from Vermont, Dr. Sarah Harwood grew up in the Duluth area and completed her undergraduate work at Macalaster College in St. Paul and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Motivated to become a veterinarian, Dr. Harwood continued her education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1997. She performed a one-year internship in internal medicine and surgery at Boston Road Animal Hospital in Springfield, MA before returning to Duluth where she still resides today.

Dr. Harwood joined the clinical team at Superior Animal Hospital in 1999, and her areas of professional interests include internal medicine and critical care.

Dr. Harwood shares a home with her husband, Eric, and daughter, Téa, who was welcomed into the world in April 2011. In her free time, Dr. Harwood enjoys sailing, running, traveling, and reading mystery novels. She sails with her in-laws on Polar Bear and participates in their Wednesday evening races throughout the summer. Dr. Harwood also shares her home with Jenny, a yellow Labrador, and Mr. Smith, a feline friend.

Michelle Severs, DVM

Dr. Michelle Severs is originally from Williams, a small town in northern Minnesota, and currently resides in Duluth. Dr. Severs attended the College of Saint Scholastica as an undergraduate, and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota in 2006.

Soon after graduating, Dr. Severs joined the team at Superior Animal Hospital in June 2006. She became a Fear Free Certified Professional in 2018. She has professional interests in internal medicine, dentistry, and dermatology.

Dr. Severs and her husband Eric share a mutual love of golfing and traveling, and recently had their first son, Jacob. In her free time, Dr. Severs also enjoys camping, boating, reading, and volunteering at the Humane Society of Douglas County. She shares a home with a black retriever, Stitch, a Labrador/husky mix, Daisy, and two rabbits, Twix and Snickers. Stitch and Daisy are fantastic at playing fetch, and even better at taking naps.

Dr. Ralph Weichselbaum, DVM, Ph.D. | Veterinary Imaging Specialist

Dr. Ralph Weichselbaum, with Veterinary Imaging Consultants, offers his specialization in veterinary imaging to the patients at Superior Animal Hospital. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1989, where he also completed his residency program.

Dr. Weichselbaum opened a private practice before continuing his education and earning his Ph.D. in Radiology, and becoming Board Qualified with the American College of Veterinary Radiology.

Dr. Weichselbaum established a referral practice in 1996. Today, he completes approximately 1,500 ultrasounds and specialty services per year, all performed with friendly and gentle bedside manner. In addition, he opened a facility in the Twin Cities dedicated to radioactive iodine treatment for felines with hyperthyroidism.

Dr. Brian Rose, DVM, Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon

Dr. Brian Rose, with Minnesota Mobile Veterinary Surgery, performs a range of advanced orthopedic surgeries in-house, including cruciate ligament tear repairs, hip and elbow dysplasia management, fracture repairs, and luxating patella stabilization.

Dr. Rose earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005, and completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. He also performed a residency program in veterinary orthopedic, soft-tissue, and neurologic surgeries at the University of Minnesota, while also completing Masters work in fracture biomechanics. He has professional interests in orthopedics and fracture repair, and minimally invasive oncologic and reconstructive surgeries.

Dr. Rose became a Board-Certified Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon in 2010. He was also the chief of surgery at a large, 22-doctor referral practice located in New Mexico, and published work for the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association and Veterinary Surgery.

Jenna Harting, Practice Manager

Jenna Harting has a passion for animals and natural drive to provide patients of Superior Animal Hospital with proper care. She finds fulfillment in her role as Practice Manager at Superior Animal Hospital by knowing that each and every pet that comes through the doors is cared for passionately and genuinely, and each client is provided a positive experience. Plus, snuggles with puppies and kittens are the best!

Prior to working in the veterinary field, Jenna obtained a Master of Music in Vocal Performance. She continues to indulge in her love for music today by playing bass and singing in a band called ‘The Latelys’. She also spends her free time volunteering at Duluth Vineyard Church.

Jenna shares a home with her husband and two pets: a domestic shorthair cat named Winston and a Golden Retriever named Buddy. Buddy is a pretty special companion who is named after Buddy the Elf for having a similar personality. Can you believe he loves to hold hands and hug? Golden Retriever is Jenna’s favorite breed, and they’re friendly, personable nature matches her personality too!

Dr. Kayla Lilyquist

Dr. Kayla Lilyquist has a passion for helping animals and providing high quality medicine to her patients. Originally from Hermantown, MN, Dr. Lilyquist is excited to return to to the area once more to practice veterinary medicine. During her undergraduate studies at The College of St. Scholastic, she was a veterinary assistant at Superior Animal Hospital from 2007-2010. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Iowa State University in 2012. She currently lives in Duluth, MN and is thrilled to be helping animals again at Superior Animal Hospital.

Her areas of professional interests include abdominal ultrasound, dermatology and orthopedic surgery. When she is not practicing high-quality animal medicine, Dr. Lilyquist enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, son and dog Nessa, a senior mixed breed. She loves to play volleyball in the summer and snowmobile in the winter with her husband and friends. Dr. Lilyquist also enjoys camping, reading and being active with her church.
