The Penfield Veterinary Hospital is a full service veterinary hospital located on Penfield Rd, in Rochester, New York. Our staff of experienced veterinarians has varied interests in pet wellness care, nutritional counseling, internal medicine, dental care, surgery, radiography, and ultrasonography. Specialized veterinary medical care in the areas of surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, ophthalmology, cardiology, and advanced imaging are available through referral to our veterinary specialty practice, Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service.

Our caring staff of licensed veterinary technicians, animal care assistants, pet care providers and client service representatives is available to assist you with any questions you may have. Erik Herrema, VMD, MS Education, BS Chemical Engineering
Erik Herrema, VMD, MS Education, BS Chemical Engineering

Dr. Erik Herrema is the director of Penfield Veterinary Hospital. He was born and raised in Irondequoit. Dr Herrema attended Bucknell University where he graduated in 1993 with a B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering. Following college graduation, Dr. Herrema was employed as an environmental chemist by Target Environmental, located in Columbia, MD. After two years at Target, Dr. Herrema decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. He spent two years at Alfred University as a graduate assistant lacrosse coach for the Men’s Varsity Lacrosse team while acquiring a Masters degree in Secondary Education. Dr. Herrema was admitted to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1999 and was awarded his VMD degree in 2003. Dr. Herrema was the recipient of the Leonard Pearson Prize (the schools highest honor awarded to the fourth-year student who demonstrates the best potential for professional and/or academic leadership in veterinary medicine) and The American College of Veterinary Radiology Award at his graduation.

With professional interests in internal medicine, cardiology, radiology and ultrasonography, Dr. Herrema enjoys practicing general veterinary medicine and surgery at Penfield Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Herrema resides with his family in Pittsford, NY. Along with family outings, Dr. Herrema enjoys golfing, fishing and relaxing with his dog Sadie.

Todd Braaten, DVM
Todd Braaten, DVM

A general practitioner since 1996, Dr. Todd A. Braaten has been caring for animals since mid-1980’s. Having graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1992 with a degree in chemistry, Dr. Braaten concluded his studies at Oklahoma State University where he received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 1996.

From his days back in Wisconsin where he cared for horses at two stables to his present position at Penfield, Dr. Braaten has always been a lover of animals whether on or off the clock. Thus it comes as no surprise that the doctor hosts many, many pets in his home. Included among his menagerie of animal companions are two Pit Bulls, (Elise and Pebble), and six cats: Abby, Sally, Frank, George, Travis and Ben. Dr. Braaten also owns several exotic pets, these being his one ferret, three rabbits, (Jack, Mr. Chomp Chomp and Bad Bunny), three lizards, (Arthur, Merlin and Edgar Styles) and six fish tanks ranging from 40-330 gallons!

Married to Mary, a social worker at St. Mary“s Hospital, during his leisure time, Dr. Braaten enjoys billiards, biking, fishing and woodworking.

Leanna Hawkins, DVM
Leanna Hawkins, DVM

Dr. Leanna Hawkins studied Animal Science at Cornell University and received her BS in 2000. Following her undergraduate studies, she did an internship at the Syracuse Zoo and at Wolf Hollow Wildlife Rehabilitation center in the San Juan Islands. From there she entered Veterinary School at the University of Minnesota and received her DVM in 2005.

After graduating from Vet school, she moved to Rochester, NY and started working at Penfield Veterinary Hospital. She has veterinary interests in small animal internal medicine, and wildlife medicine and conservation.

Outside of the veterinary clinic, Dr. Hawkins enjoys outdoor activities such as biking and running, photography, and reading, as well as planning her upcoming wedding to fiance Scott, also a veterinarian. Dr. Hawkins also enjoys playing with her Border Collies Finn, Trinity, and Kyla, and her 6 cats, Donkey, Beckett, Neo, Naiobi, Kahluah and Bear. She hopes to someday have a farm with sheep, goats, and many other animals.
