Krista Hardy also knew from an early age that she wanted to be a veterinarian. She was born and raised in Texas and was known as the animal lover of the family. In addition to the traditional pets like cats and dogs, the Hardy house also had unique additions like squirrels, rats, goldfish, hamsters and a ten-pound iguana. Dr. Hardy attended Texas A&M for her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science and graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. During veterinary school she went on veterinary outreach trips which opportunities for learning and expanding veterinary knowledge in Africa and Argentina.
After graduation she completed a rotating medical and surgical internship at the Coral Springs Animal Hospital, a 30 doctor, over 100 employee facility that sees over 50,000 patients a year. She continued working there for 9 years focusing on emergency and critical care, served as a mentor in the hospital’s veterinary internship program, while working alongside 20 veterinary specialists. Dr. Hardy completed the grueling process to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2013 and became a specialist in canine and feline practice. She has a strong interest in internal medicine and emergency/critical care. She and her husband, Dr. Joe Spoo, share their house with two cats and three dogs. Last spring they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Grace Marie, to the world and are very much looking forward to this exciting chapter of their lives.
A native of northwest Iowa, Dr. Spoo knew from an early age that the only career for him was veterinary medicine. He is a 2001 graduate of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After spending his first two years in practice in northern Minnesota he relocated to Sioux Falls and has been practicing in the tri-state area for the last 12 years with licenses in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota.
Spoo’s passion is the canine athlete and he believes in a cradle-to-grave approach to managing the canine athlete. He recently became board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is one of only a handful of such specialists in private practice in the world, and the only whose primary focus is hunting dogs. Dr. Spoo has numerous research publications to his credit as he pushes to advance the field of veterinary medicine. In addition, he is an invited speaker to state and national veterinary meetings as an expert on the subjects of canine rehabilitation and sports medicine. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians as the Public Liaison. His expertise in dealing with athletic canines allows him to provide optimum care to companion pets as well.
In addition to his practice responsibilities he has an active consulting business serving sporting dog owners and the sporting dog industry. He also manages a website (www.gundogdoc.com), a comprehensive resource for all things gundog related. In his free time you can find him enjoying South Dakotas many outdoor opportunities chasing his dogs in the fall or fishing the rest of the year. In addition he is an avid runner, biker, reader, writer and photographer. He and his wife, Dr. Krista Hardy, share their house with three dogs (and two cats that he is related to by marriage). Last spring they also welcomed their beautiful little girl, Grace Marie to the family, she's already spent more days in a veterinary clinic than most people do in a lifetime and we suspect she will already be an excellent ultrasonographer possibly before she's able to walk.
