When you take a trip, what happens to your pet? Do your bring your furry friend to a boarding kennel, or pack up a doggy tote and hit the road?
There are a number of ways to make travel with your pet easier. Here are a few tips for making it happen:
- Make a Plan.
First, be sure your dog can tolerate travel. Start off by taking them on short car rides to fun destinations. Once you’re sure he can handle the motion and confinement of a road trip, make a map of your route. Select some pet-friendly accommodations on your way and the closest veterinarian at every stop. Plan on finding a rest stop every three or four hours to get your dog out of the car to stretch their legs and have a potty break.
Carry your dog’s toys, food bowls, blankets, and snacks all in one bag or stashed in one area of your vehicle. Be sure to bring a jug of your own water from home. If anything is going to upset your dog’s stomach on the road, it will most likely be water from an unfamiliar source.
- Packing for Your Pooch.
When you pack for your pup, you might consider making a list of items that will come in handy along the way.
- Air freshener (pet-friendly, of course)
- Paper towels
- Plastic, resealable bags
- Bath towels
- Plastic bag with dog’s name and owner identification info
- Pet roller to remove hair from hotel furniture and drapes
- A can of pumpkin or chicken broth, just in case they have a case of motion sickness
- A jug of his own water from home
- His food and water dishes
- His own familiar bed or blanket
- Bring a Crate.
Depending on the size of your pet, making room for a crate can solve a host of issues. Many pet owners like to use specialized seat belts to ensure their pets’ safety. But on a long trip, a crate is the way to go. Not only does it provide your dog comfort with more space en route, but it gives them the security of his own familiar space. He can ride in comfort with his toys, his blanket, and his water bowl. If you could travel everywhere with your own bedroom, wouldn’t you?
