11518 Allecingie Pkwy, N Chesterfield, VA 23235

Cardinal Animal Hospital is a full-service hospital dedicated to serving its clients with high quality medicine, surgery, and dentistry in a warm, personal atmosphere.

The Cardinal Rule...

Very simply, our philosophy at Cardinal Animal Hospital is to treat our clients as we would wish to be treated. We are all "owned" by beloved pets and appreciate the close bond that develops between owners and animals. We work as a team with you to provide the best possible care for your pet, taking the time necessary to integrate and involve you in your pet's care.

We offer a full line of wellness examinations and tests that are recommended on an annual basis to keep your pet in the best of health.

Among the services we offer (no, this list is by no means complete!):

-Total Health Blood testing
-Fecal testing for intestinal parasites
-Testing for vector-borne (tick and mosquito) diseases including Heartworm, Ehrlichia, Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis
-Annual vaccinations custom tailored to the needs of your pet
-Microchip implantation
-Dental Health Assessment

Dr. Minor offers both general and orthopedic surgery to all sizes and breeds of small mammals.

Here is a partial list of the surgical services we can provide:
-Routine spaying and neutering
-Foreign body removal
-Bladder stone removal
-Exploratory surgery and tumor resection
-Thyroidectomy in hyperthyroid cats
-Multiple ophthalmic procedures such as ectropion and entropion repair and enucleation
-Cranial cruciate ligament repair in small and medium sized dogs
-Definitive correction of patella luxation
-Femoral head and neck ostectomy

Therapeutic Laser

We are pleased to offer therapeutic laser treatments which provide relief from pain and inflammation of arthritis and enhance healing of wounds and infection. Therapeutic laser has many applications from inflamed joints to ear infections, gum disease, wounds, skin infections and inflammation. It is non-invasive and painless as it stimulates the body's own resources to heal.

Onsite Digital Radiographic Imaging

We have a digital radiographic "X-Ray" imaging machine on site that allows us to diagnose issues with your pet when internal medical or potentially surgical concerns arise. Our system allows us to view the images immediately so there is no need for extended waiting or to be referred to another facility for these services. If ever we need to consult with or refer your pet to an outside specialist, copies of your pet's radiographs can be easily transferred to CD or emailed. No more cumbersome and outdated "film" radiographs!

We offer a variety of dental options from routine hand scaling to full service dental cleaning to keep your pet’s smile bright and their breath fresh and clean. We can also offer solutions for removal of damaged teeth and gum disease. As a part of your pet's annual or twice yearly wellness examination, we will assess your pet's dental health and make the best recommendations for preventive care and treatment if so indicated.

Kitten Vaccination Protocols

We tailor vaccination protocols for our feline friends to the needs of the patient, namely whether they go outside or not. Kittens receive their first vaccinations starting at 8-9 weeks. At 10 weeks or older we routinely screen for Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS . Vaccinations are boostered every 3 weeks until the age of 16 or so weeks. Rabies vaccine is given at the end of this series but does not need to be boostered again for a full year.

Puppy Vaccination Protocols

Puppies begin life with immunity from disease acquired from the dam's first milk which is rich in antibodies. Over time, this immunity declines to a level where the puppy becomes susceptible to disease. As long as the maternal antibody level is high enough, it will prevent vaccinations from having a lasting benefit. It is for this reason that puppies receive a series of vaccinations so that we can be sure that we cover that period until the vaccinations will remain effective over an extended period.

According to current research, puppies' immune systems may not be mature enough to respond to vaccination before 8-9 weeks, so earlier vaccinations are likely a waste of time and stress them unnecessarily. In addition, it takes the immune system 3 weeks to respond, recover and be ready to respond to the next vaccination, so 'traditional' protocols calling for vaccination every 2 weeks are not recommended. Our protocols are customized according to the needs of the individual puppy for now and for their adult lives.

Depending on the size of the patient, we may give Rabies vaccine separately from and at least 3 weeks apart from other vaccinations.
