Dr. Robert Redisch

Dr. Robert Redisch

Dr. Redisch graduated from Michigan State University in 1972 as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Less than two years later, he founded Union Lake Veterinary Hospital. During that time, he also earned a Diplomate of Preventive Medicine from Florida Institute of Technology in 1978 and has spent time as a member of the medical advisory council at the Detroit Zoological Park
Although semi-retired, Dr. Redisch still has special interest in surgery and building the most unique pet care complex in Michigan. He has a weak heart for terriers but is fond of all animals big and small.

Dr. Charles Plein

Dr. Charles Plein

Dr. Plein graduated from Michigan State University in 1974 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He also gained practical experience through the senior internship program at MSU, by spending time in Massachusetts with the ASPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) at Rowley Memorial Animal Hospital, and practicing emergency medicine at the Veterinary Emergency Service.

In 1985, he became the co-owner of Union Lake Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Plein is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and Southeastern Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Plein's special veterinary interests include cardiac and abdominal ultrasound, internal medicine, and animal behavior and training. Outside of the practice, he enjoys spending time with his wife Nancy and children Sarah and Matthew.

Dr. Kate Deyo-Reynolds

Dr. Kate Deyo-Reynolds

Dr. Reynolds is a graduate of Michigan State University, having earned her dual-degree Bachelors of Science in Animal Science and Zoology in 1999 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. During her time at MSU, she served as her veterinary class president for 4 years. She is a tried and true Spartan!

After graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Reynolds began her career in Sacramento, California, where she completed a rigorous 1-year internship at the Sacramento Animal Medical Group, concentrating on Oncology, Surgery, General Medicine, and Emergency Medicine.

Since 2004, Dr. Reynolds has been with Union Lake Veterinary Hospital, and she is proud to be a part of such a comprehensive pet care complex that practices the highest quality of medicine. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Animal Hospital Association. Her special interests include dermatology, nutrition, client education, and she enjoys participating in continuing education.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Reynolds enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out, youth development, and taking ballroom dancing lessons with her husband.

Dr. Erica Hawker

Dr. Erica Hawker

Dr. Hawker graduated from the University of Michigan in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science In Natural Resources. She then attended Michigan State University and received her doctorate in veterinary medicine in 2001. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Hawker joined Union Lake Veterinary Hospital upon graduation and has special interests in internal medicine, dermatology, and pain management. She particularly enjoys working with geriatric patients and improving their quality of life with pain management.

Outside of the hospital, she enjoys reading, watching movies, and spending time with her husband, son, and daughter. They share their home with two dogs and two cats.

Dr. Jennifer Herdon

Dr. Jennifer Herdon

Dr. Herdon attended Michigan State University and received both her Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree in 2001 and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2003. She pursued further academic studies through an internship program at the renowned California Animal Hospital in West Los Angeles. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Herdon's special interests in veterinary medicine include internal medicine, dermatology, pain management, and client education.

She enjoys spending time outside the hospital with her family and friends, as well as her 3 cats.

 Dr. Barbara Rutsey

Dr. Barbara Rutsey

Dr. Rutsey earned her Bachelor's of Science degree in 1985 and graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1989, both from Michigan State University. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr Rutsey enjoyed working in mixed animal practice before joining Union Lake in 1995. She has a passion for surgery, with special interests in abdominal ultrasound and internal medicine.

Outside of veterinary work, she supports the World Wildlife Fund and the Christian Veterinary Mission. She and her husband lead a mission team to remote Kenya each October, supporting the local doctors in medical outreach. While not working, you may find them spending time in the outdoors on his Indian motorcycle or on the trails in her Jeep. They also enjoy time with their dogs, cats and rabbit at their home in the country.

 Dr. Melissa Szasz

Dr. Melissa Szasz

Dr. Szasz began working at Union Lake Pet Services as a kennel attendant when she was just 16 years old. At that time it was her dream to become a veterinarian. During summer breaks from college, she worked as a veterinary assistant at the hospital. In 2005, Dr. Szasz received her Bachelor’s in Zoology from Michigan State University and in 2008 she graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; also from Michigan State University.

Dr. Szasz is very excited to be back at Union Lake Veterinary Hospital, working as a veterinarian this time! She has special interests in surgery and pocket pets.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Szasz enjoys running with her dog, hiking, horseback riding, reading, and relaxing with her husband, family, and friends. Dr. Szasz currently has two spoiled cats and one dog.
