Description

Our staff has been performing veterinary medicine and compassionate animal care in the Henry County area for over thirty years. The Henry County Animal Hospital is a full service animal hospital whose mission is to provide the highest quality health care in an honest, caring and educational environment. We strive to help our patients live longer healthier lives, to make our practice grow and prosper, and to treat our clients, patients and each other as we would like to be treated.

Services
Henry County Animal Hospital is now accepting avian and exotic patients. Dr. Zimmers has extensive experience treating all kinds of animals, including birds, ferrets, rabbits, reptiles, and rodents. These patients require special handling and knowledge in order to be treated correctly. If you have an exotic pet in need of care, please call the hospital and make an appointment today.

Say Goodbye At Home:
We know how difficult it is to say goodbye to your beloved pet, especially in a hospital environment. To make this incredibly personal and sad time a little more comfortable for your pet and family, we are now offering euthanasia services in your home. If you are interested in this service, please call the hospital for details.

Emergency services:
We will no longer be accepting emergency calls after office hours. For the last six years, Dr. Zimmers has worked as an emergency/critical care veterinarian at large referral centers. Because of her experiences at these large hospitals, she has firsthand knowledge of what it takes to treat your pet in an emergency. In a true emergency, your pet may require bloodwork, IV fluids, radiographs, oxygen therapy, and even surgery. All of those procedures need to be done quickly and require multiple personnel to be available on site in order for your pet to have the best chance of survival. In addition, your pet would need to be monitored closely during the night, as surgical and critically ill patient’s condition can change dramatically within hours. If your pet needs emergency help after hours, please call us and our answering service will provide you with contact information to the closest emergency hospital.

Practice Owner

I am a Michigan native and a 1999 graduate of Michigan State Universitys veterinary school. During veterinary school, I worked in the necropsy (autopsy) lab and as a surgical technician in the horse wards. Having a special interest in birds and other exotic animals, I participated in dolphin and avian research projects, and won a scholarship to work with parrots in Western Australia.

After veterinary school, I became an associate in a small animal practice in Michigan whose clientele consisted of 50 percent exotic animals. There, I gained invaluable clinical experience with everything from ferrets to caimans. After 2 years, I moved down to Wellington, Florida-home of the Winter Equestrian Festival. I joined a large referral practice in West Palm Beach. I really enjoyed the challenge of emergency/critical care medicine, advanced soft tissue surgery, and working with other specialists. In 2004, I began to search for a veterinary practice to purchase. After enduring two horrendous hurricanes, my husband and I decided to move to beautiful Virginia and live in the country. In 2005, we moved to northern Virginia and I joined a large 24-hour referral practice in Woodbridge, VA. During this time, one of my horses became very ill and I began a new journey in my professional career. While still working, I attended school to learn to trim and rehabilitate lameness problems in horses. In 2007, I became a certified Equine Hoofcare Professional. While I am currently not accepting equine patients, I hope to open a rehabilitation center in the future.

In December 2007, I purchased Henry County Animal Hospital. Since that time, I have been busy. In addition to seeing patients, I have remodeled the practices landscaping, waiting, and reception areas, purchased new equipment, and started this website! I have also implemented new philosophies and procedures, which I hope will allow the hospital to practice better medicine.

I look forward to meeting you and helping your pets. My dogs, Nina -Chihuahua, Nugget -Golden Retriever, Hershey -Lab, and Bobble -Silky Terrier, as well as my Blue-fronted Amazon parrot, Echo, are at the hospital most days. When not at the hospital, I enjoy foxhunting, yoga, scrap booking, and spending time with my husband, cats, and horses.

Emily Whitmore, DVM

Growing up in the Charlottesville area and living in the state my whole life, I am a true Virginia native. As an undergraduate, I attended The College of William and Mary where I discovered veterinary medicine was the perfect profession combining my love of animals with science, medicine, and problem solving. After my undergraduate work, I moved to Blacksburg to attend Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. I developed interests in soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, and ultrasound. I also rescued my hound-mix, Kona, while in school. Born and raised in Blacksburg, he is a die-hard Hokie fan.

I am excited to be at Henry County Animal Hospital and look forward to providing high quality medicine and compassionate care to you and your furry family members. In my free time, Kona and I enjoy being outdoors taking long walks, running, and hiking. I also love playing soccer, traveling internationally, and photography.
