Dr. Cheryl Peterein
She was raised in a small community south of St. Louis and ever since Dr. Peterein was a small child she had a naturally high affinity for animals and they were also attracted to her. She grew up helping her grandfather and uncle on the farm caring for the animals, especially her horses.
One day her uncle noticed how willing she was to care for sick or injured animals and encouraged her to become a veterinarian. He said that he had wanted to become veterinarian when he was younger, but his dad didn’t want him to leave the farm so he couldn’t go to vet school. He said, “You have a natural way with animals! You ought to be a vet!”
What a great idea, but at that time there was virtually no women that were veterinarians. So with that little encouragement from her uncle that’s what she did! Every time she signed up for a class throughout her undergraduate career she took classes to prepare her for vet school.
Finally the day came when she graduated from the University of Missouri and moved to Texas. She has been practicing in Texas ever since.
Dr. Peterein opened her own small animal hospital on April 1, 1987 in Bedford, Texas. She has been a long time member of the A.V.M.A, T.V.M.A, T.A.V.P, T.C.V.M.A, D.C.V.M.A, A.A.H.A, I.V.A.S, A.A.V.A, and A.H.V.M.A. Not only does she perform traditional western medicine but also does some alternative medicine and nutritional therapies to help her patients. She is also certified in Veterinary Acupuncture and Bowen.
Some of her favorite things to do in her spare time are traveling, camping, horseback riding, sewing, and learning. She spends a great deal of time in continuing education classes for the benefit of herself, her clients and her patients.
